Most of us only think of energy in terms of how much it costs. But if we want to decarbonise our energy supply, make the best use of renewables and ensure everyone has the power they need, when they need it - that will have to change. The whole energy system is going to have to become a lot smarter and more proactive about how energy is generated, distributed, stored, and used. And we as consumers, and the devices in our homes, are going to have to get involved. In this talk, Claire will set out the challenges to the energy system and its impact on consumers, highlighting opportunities for design innovation to contribute to decarbonising the energy system.
Claire is a product management, strategy, and design consultant specialising in IoT, hardware-enabled services, and clean energy tech innovation. She has helped a wide range of organisations develop consumer, commercial, and industrial products and services, from breast pumps to power tools, home automation and energy management, to supply chain and automotive. She is currently working with the Energy Systems Catapult’s Living Lab as interim product lead for the Whole Energy Systems Accelerator programme. She is the lead author of Designing Connected Products: UX for the Consumer Internet of Things, published by O’Reilly.
Networked thermostats, fitness monitors, and door locks show that IoT devices can (and will) provide abundant ways for people to interact with the world around them. But designing connected products for consumers is a challenge that involves issues beyond UI and interaction design.
Claire's book provides experienced UX designers and technologists with a clear and practical roadmap for approaching consumer product strategy and design in this novel market. By drawing on the best of current design practice and academic research, Designing Connected Products delivers sound advice for working with cross-device interactions and complex ecosystems inherent in IoT technology.
